“Even in a small town like Riverside you can find a place which is the entertainment highlight of the city. The Gourmet Detective is definitely a must-see musical mystery show. There is murder, intrigues, mystery and audience interaction. I couldn’t have had a better evening had I gone to Broadway!”

How it All Began

Having won this very cool Viewer’s Choice Award (see previous post), we’ve been asked by a few folks how it all began. So, here’s a little reminiscing. Back in 1989 we (our tiny production team) attended a few “audience participation” mysteries and were horrified by the Don Rickles approach to improvisation. If Don Rickles is before your time, he was very funny, but his act was picking out unsuspecting audience members and criticizing, humiliating and embarrassing them. Hey, he made a career of it, but we preferred a higher end experience, one that put the audience on a pedestal rather than on trial. So, we went searching for a team of directors, improvisation experts and performers to pull the whole thing together. The first performance was November 2nd, 1990 and it worked. Audiences of all types loved the mix of audience friendly participation, music, comedy and drama. It was a ton of work and there just a few of us, but one shout goes out to our good friend Silvie Zamora. She is currently our improv coach and was one of the original cast members 20 years ago!

Congrats to Our Cast and Team!

Get Away with Murder this Valentine’s Day

That’s our way of saying get away for an evening of mystery and romance. Valentine’s Day is coming up and one of the most fun nights is to get to our show, enjoy some dinner, a few laughs, a few murders, and then head to the elegant digs of one of our partner hotels for a little private time. We have rooms available at the Balboa Inn in Newport Beach and at The Mission Inn in Riverside. Check it out and have fun!
